Die Gütigen – The Kindly Ones

Greece / Austria

The production by the Greek artist, acclaimed for her world premiere at the Mauthausen Memorial, confronts the resurgence of right-wing populism and radicalism. At La Strada, the piece unfolds at the Liebenauer Grünanger, once home to the city's largest forced labor camp. Papakonstantinou blends opera melodies with new media, myths with contemporary politics, and narratives of the present. Poems by Greek writer and Mauthausen survivor Iakovos Kambanellis resonate with the Eumenides, benevolent beings from the Greek tragedy Oresteia. The music is composed by Blaine L. Reininger, co-founder of the pioneering band Tuxedomoon, with support from singers of the Mariatroster Männervokalwirtschaft.
